If you want to be a head coach in the NFL, working with Sean McVay is a pretty good place to start.
McVay, who’s just 39 years old and still one of the youngest coaches in the league, has helped several of his former assistants become head coaches elsewhere. Whether they were positional coaches or coordinators in Los Angeles, there are now five current head coaches, one former head coach and a former interim head coach with ties to McVay and the Rams.
The newest branch on McVay’s coaching tree? Liam Coen, who was a positional coach for three years and the offensive coordinator for one in Los Angeles. Coen is set to become the Jaguars’ next head coach after a bizarre turn of events where he agreed to an extension with the Bucs, only to change his mind and bolt for Jacksonville.
Here’s the latest look at McVay’s coaching tree.

Rams offensive coordinator (2017)
LaFleur was the first of McVay’s former assistants to A) become an offensive coordinator and B) land a head coaching job. He went from Rams OC in 2017 to Titans OC in 2018 to Packers head coach in 2019, and he’s been one of the best in the NFL ever since.

Rams defensive coordinator (2020)
Staley’s rise to a head coaching position was rather sudden. He went from outside linebackers coach with the Bears (2017-2018) and Broncos (2019) to being the Rams’ defensive coordinator for one year in 2020 to being hired as the Chargers’ head coach in 2021, so he had just one year of experience as an NFL coordinator before landing a head coaching job.
He was fired by the Chargers during the 2023 season and landed with the 49ers in 2024 as their assistant head coach.
Head coaching record: 24-24
