Predicting the winners of several position battles

Texas is nearing the midpoint of spring practices, and while still early a handful of crucial position battles taking place.

The Longhorns will feature new starters across the offensive line. Several new faces are expected to emerge at defensive back and wide receiver. And the quarterback competition is one of the hottest in the country.

Texas fans are excited for each of the battles: They hope Year 2 under Steve Sarkisian will go much better than the first. Players have become more vocal about turning the program around, primarily Moro Ojomo’s passionate interview with the media on Thursday.

There’s still several months left for these position battles to take shape, but it’s never too early to predict who will win the starting jobs. Here’s who I believe will start at several key positions in Week 1.

Cornerbacks: Ryan Watts and D’Shawn Jamison

While other players such as Terrance Brooks and Jaylon Guilbeau will likely see significant playing time at some point, the winners of the two corner spots are likely going to be fifth-year senior D’Shawn Jamison and Ohio State transfer Ryan Watts. They have both been taking the first-team snaps this spring, and Watts has been somewhat of a standout early on.

Wide receiver: Isaiah Neyor

This will come as no surprise to anyone, but there was a question of who will be the third starting receiver after Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington. However, Wyoming transfer Isaiah Neyor has been everything the Longhorns have asked for and more. He has widely been regarded as one of the best players in spring ball, and some have gone as far to say Neyor will more likely be the 1B to Worthy’s 1A, rather than the sidekick receiver some expected him to be.

The battle with Marcus Washington, Kelvontay Dixon and Casey Cain feels more like a formality at this point. These three players will compete…
