Going into the 2022 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers’ roster.
Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.
We look at another sophomore this time around who is looking for a bigger Year 2 in Baton Rouge. Damarius McGhee was a top-200 recruit coming out of high school, but despite appearing in 12 games as a true freshman a year ago, he didn’t make much of an impact. With so much turnover in the secondary, though, that could be set to change.

Depth Chart Overview
McGhee didn’t have much of a chance of seeing more than reserve action heading into his true freshman with two players who ultimately got drafted starting on the outside in Derek Stingley Jr. and Cordale Flott, though he did see some more action down the stretch when the former was injured.
Both are now gone, and McGhee has an opportunity to compete for a starting spot as a sophomore, but that battle will be similarly difficult this offseason. LSU added Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Mekhi Garner from Oklahoma State and Louisiana, respectively, in the transfer portal.
Bernard-Converse and Garner bring starting experience to the table, and they are the current favorites to win the outside corner jobs. Still, that’s a position where LSU doesn’t have much depth aside from McGhee and Jordan Toles, who has primarily played safety to this point but saw some work on the outside during the spring.
