Quarterback room filled with talent headed into ’22

Nebraska Cornhuskers football season is right around the corner, 10 days to be exact until the Huskers open their 2022 campaign against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland. With spring football and a majority of offseason work in the books, the depth chart becomes clearer for head coach Scott Frost and company. We’ll take a look at where each of Nebraska’s position groups stand, who will make the most impact, and why each group could thrive or fall short.

First up are the quarterbacks, a position that will look and feel much different than in years past for the Huskers. The transition starts with new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, formerly of Pitt. Whipple’s affinity for pro-style offense blends well with Nebraska’s new signal caller Casey Thompson, but would have been a square-in-circle fit for former Cornhusker quarterback Adrian Martinez.

The search for a new quarterback didn’t come easy for Frost. The Huskers struck out on Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler, USC’s Kedon Slovis, Fresno State’s Jake Haener and LSU’s Myles Brennan, who recently decided to retire from football.

OUT: Adrian Martinez

Martinez, Nebraska’s dual-threat signal caller since 2018, darted for the transfer portal and landed at Kansas State in an offense that will better suit his style of play. Last year, he completed nearly 62 percent of his passes for a career high 2,863 yards and a 14/10 touchdown to interception ratio. Martinez nearly matched his passing TD total from 2021 on the ground, with 13 scores and 525 yards.

IN: Casey Thompson

Enter Thompson, who threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns on a 5-7 Texas Longhorns team that experienced much of the same frustration as the Huskers did last…
