Well that was something. New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport was ejected after exchanging blows with Carolina Panthers running back D’Onta Foreman in the last game of the 2022 season on Sunday. Davenport tackled Foreman to the ground during a play, but both players were chirping with each other after coming to their feet.
Panthers tight end Ian Thomas tried to get between them and keep it from escalating, which Davenport didn’t appreciate — he ripped at Thomas’s shoulder pad to get another word in to Foreman, who struck his helmet. That led to a larger scrum and a series of whistles. Ultimately both Davenport and Foreman were thrown out of the game.
This means Davenport will end his 2022 season with more ejections (1) than sacks (0.5) in a Saints uniform. He’ll be a free agent in the spring and it’s unlikely New Orleans re-signs him after a difficult career was interrupted often with injuries. He’s still an effective pass rusher and bags up dozens of pressures each season, and he’ll have offers in free agency. But this is probably it for him in black and gold.
