HC Sean McDermott still has yet to announce who will call plays for the defense this year, and whether it will be him or first-time defensive coordinator and former Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich. McDermott has said answers will come during camp, where Babich will have more opportunities to practice calling plays.

“There’s going to be intentionality on my part to make sure, whether it’s practice or preseason games, that Bobby’s given that opportunity,” said McDermott, via The Athletic. “So it’s just a matter of when and for how long.”

Babich helped develop Bills’ linebackers Tremaine Edmunds, Matt Milano, and Terrel Bernard. He also previously coached safeties upon joining the Bills as an assistant with their defensive backs in 2017, and has a track record of player development at every level that McDermott values.

“Bobby’s a good coach. He’s developed players,” McDermott said during his season-ending news conference in January. “I think when you evaluate a coach, are you taking what you have and making it better? It doesn’t need to get any more complex than that, and Bobby’s done that.”
