The Doak Walker Award has been given out annually to the nation’s best collegiate running back since the award’s conception in 1990. The award is named after former SMU Mustangs running back Doak Walker who was the recipient of the 1948 Heisman Trophy and spent time before and during college with the United States Military.
Walker was a phenomenal collegiate player as he was a consensus two-time All-American, but is said to have been an even better person. His professional career only spanned six seasons, but during that time he was a two-time NFL champion, five-time Pro Bowler, and two-time NFL scoring leader.
Despite being a relatively recent addition, the award is considered one of the most prestigious in the sport. Over the past 34 seasons, only six schools have won the award multiple times as ranked below. Ties are listed in alphabetical order.

In recent years we have grown to associate Texas Tech with the air raid offense, so it’s hard to imagine a time when they were a run-first offense. However, that was the case for most of the 90’s as the Red Raiders had two winners within four years in Byron Morris (1993) and Byron Hanspard (1996).

Over the past 15 years, not many schools have been able to establish an identity in the way that the Stanford Cardinals have. Whether it was Jim Harbaugh or David Shaw calling the shots, you could always rely on Stanford to be good in the trenches with one of the best running backs in the country. The Cardinals produced two winners during that time Toby Gerhart (2009) and Bryce Love (2017). The craziest part is that Christian McCaffery never won the award.
