CHARLOTTE — The Panthers made a series of roster moves on Thursday, including releasing veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney.
The 32-year-old Clowney tied for the team high here with 5.5 sacks last season. He was acquired last March, giving the Rock Hill, S.C. native and former No. 1 overall pick a chance to play for his hometown team.
The Panthers acquired 26-year-old former Vikings outside linebacker Patrick Jones II during their early sprint through free agency. He had 7.0 sacks last year for the Vikings.
During the draft, they traded up to take Nic Scourton in the second round and Princely Umanmielen in the third, giving them a pair of young options at the position. Scourton doesn’t turn 21 until the preseason, and Umanmielen just turned 23.
The Panthers still have a number of options at the position, including D.J. Wonnum and DJ Johnson, along with Amaré Barno, Kenny Dyson, Thomas Incoom, and former first-rounder Boogie Basham.
