When LSU began the Brian Kelly era with its annual spring game on Saturday afternoon, all the eyes were on the quarterback battle. But while most saw the game as an opportunity to compare likely front-runners Myles Brennan and Jayden Daniels, the main story was a third passer, Garrett Nussmeier.
Nussmeier finished with 136 yards passing and a touchdown, the best numbers of any quarterback, and with Daniels struggling, it feels as though this competition is not very close to having a winner.
Kelly concurred. After the game, he said the coaching staff is essentially back to the drawing board at the quarterback spot.
“We didn’t clear up anything with the quarterback today,” Kelly said, according to ESPN. “We probably made it more difficult.”
Daniels arrived with significant fanfare after starting for three seasons at Arizona State, but he completed just three of his nine passing attempts for 68 yards, though he found the end zone. He is the newest of the four quarterbacks to join the group, but it wasn’t exactly a confidence-building performance.
Kelly went on to elaborate about each of the quarterbacks, including true freshman Walker Howard, a former five-star recruit who made his LSU debut in this gand threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
“Brennan was good today. I mean, he does really good things with the football,” Kelly said. “He knows the offense. He’s smart. He takes care of it. Nussmeier, we talked about his athletic ability, his is arm strength. Daniels is really, really fast and Walker’s got one of the strongest arms on the team. So I don’t know if we’ve cleared up anything there.”
However, don’t expect a two-quarterback situation in Baton Rouge, as Kelly seemed to brush off that idea.
“It has to be a situation where, you know, you have to do it,” he said. “I’d much rather just play one quarterback and then try to fit the offense to their traits.”
