Salary forfeited and salary cap implications

The Arizona Cardinals will be without wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins for the first six games of the season. He received a six-game suspension after testing positive for a banned anabolic agent.

This has some effect on the Cardinals’ salary cap situation.

Hopkins will miss six games and forfeits that salary with the suspension.

He is scheduled to make $6.65 million in salary, which amounts to more than $369,000 per week for 18 regular-season weeks.

For six games, that means he loses more than $2.2 million in salary. As the Cardinals will not have to pay that salary, they will get that cap space back.

My understanding is that they will get that cap space once his suspension begins, so they will not be able to use that until the season begins.

Hopkins’ salary for the season will total $4.43 million after his suspension. Including the $11.3 million prorated cap hit for his signing bonus and restructure bonus, Hopkins’ cap hit decreases from $17.95 million to $15.73 million.
