We’ve spent months previewing the 2022 NFL draft, and now the draft is over, we can assess each team’s roster ahead of the 2022 NFL season.
The Washington Commanders added eight players from the NFL draft and signed 13 undrafted free agents. Outside of adding a linebacker, the Commanders filled most of their needs in the draft. Washington wanted a wideout and running back and added Jahan Dotson and Brian Robinson Jr.
Opinions are mixed regarding Washington’s draft. Those who didn’t really like it cited value as the reason. Some thought the Commanders reached on each of their first three picks. However, many around the NFL believed Dotson was a first-round talent, and Washington moved down to draft Dotson while adding two mid-round selections in the process.
Here are our takeaways from Washington’s 2022 NFL draft class.
Commanders valued experience
Alabama defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis (48). Washington’s strategy was clear with its first four picks. Instead of gambling on high-ceiling players, the Commanders placed a higher value on players who could help them in 2022. Last season, Washington saw high ceilings for Jamin Davis, Dyami Brown and Benjamin St-Juste when they were selected, however, for different reasons, received next to no production from the trio.
In Jahan Dotson, Phidarian Mathis, Brian Robinson Jr. and Percy Butler, Washington is getting four players who contributed for at least four years. These players may have a lower ceiling, but a much higher floor. If we include all eight of Washington’s picks, each one has plenty of playing experience, including quarterback Sam Howell, who started for three years at North Carolina.
