Going into the 2022 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers’ roster.
Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.
Here, we’re taking a look at a true freshman who is already on campus as an early enrollee in DeMario Tolan, a linebacker from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando. Landing a blue-chip prospect from the talent-rich state of Florida is always a win, and the Tigers will hope Tolan can make an immediate impact.

Depth Chart Overview
It can always be a bit of a shot in the dark when trying to predict which players will make an immediate impact as a true freshman. Based on his recruiting bona fides alone, Tolan seems like a prime candidate.
He sat just outside the top 200 at No. 201 on the 247Sports Composite, and he’s the second-highest rated linebacker in LSU’s class. The only problem for Tolan is that the top-rated linebacker in the class is Harold Perkins, a five-star recruit who will almost certainly see action in 2022.
Linebacker isn’t the deepest position group on the field, but there are experienced players currently above him on the depth chart: Mike Jones Jr., Micah Baskerville and Greg Penn III, to name a few. Add in another off-ball linebacker transfer in West Weeks, and it seems more likely than not Tolan will have to settle for reserve/special teams reps in Year 1.
