Rey Maualuga receives critical acclaim in historical rankings

It’s the offseason, which means historical rankings of former college stars are worth debating and discussing.

How would you rank the Pac-12’s greatest all-time linebackers, and for that matter, the greatest Pac-12 players at every position group?

Jack Follman, who has appeared on our Trojans: Wired podcast before, is compiling these positional player rankings at SportsPac12.

In his linebacker rankings, USC’s Rey Maualuga is third.

f you were to look up “ideal college linebacker” in the dictionary, you might find Maualuga. He was a scary hitter who was a three-time first-team All-Pac-10 guy.He had an incredible 2008 season, winning the Bednarik Award, and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year while also earning unanimous All-American honors.

What is worth emphasizing about Maualuga is that his success flowed into USC’s team success. He wasn’t just a great individual player on an island; his excellence produced team results and positive outcomes. He made teammates better.

That’s the kind of player Lincoln Riley is looking for.
