Denver Broncos general manager George Paton addressed most of the team’s glaring needs heading into the offseason before Day 3 of the NFL draft.
So by then, when Eyioma Uwazurike‘s name was called in the fourth round, the Broncos were theoretically adding depth pieces to the roster. That sounds ironic with seven of the team’s nine picks occurring on the last day of the draft. But it’s more so the luxury of acquiring Russell Wilson.
Doubling down on that point, for reference, the Broncos’ Super Bowl odds moved up to the seventh-best after acquiring Wilson. Although the team hasn’t made the playoffs since 2015. But with Shelby Harris a part of the Wilson trade, Uwazurike has an outside chance to play the majority of the defensive end snaps on the defensive line. If he’s ready.
Uwazurike (6-6, 316 pounds) brings speed, size and quickness to the Broncos’ defensive line. For reference, he drew comparisons to DT Corey Williams during the pre-draft process. Talking to the media during rookie minicamp, Uwazurike said, “I consider myself as a balanced defensive lineman. I feel like I have enough speed, enough size, and enough quickness. I feel like I can use all those pretty well, so I’m not just a one-trick pony. I have multiple things I can use that can help me.”
Denver’s staff has been pleased with the defensive lineman’s work ethic as well. Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero added that Uwazurike is “very athletic for his size” and that “he’s working his butt off right now.”
That athleticism and work ethic should help Uwazurike win a starting job sooner than later in Denver.
