Broncos Wire‘s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, No. 85.
Before the Broncos: Okwuegbunam (6-5, 258 pounds) is one of the then-Denver Broncos general manager John Elway’s final draft picks from the team’s 2020 draft class. He’s a former fourth-round pick. Starting at Missouri as a true freshman, Okwuegbunam bypassed his senior season. All told, he totaled 98 receptions for 1,187 yards and 23 touchdowns in three seasons (27 games).
Broncos tenure: Drafted as Noah Fant insurance, Okwuegbunam simply hasn’t had a chance to pay off his fourth-round status with Denver. That and injuries have stopped Okwuegbunam’s airplane from getting off the runway. But with Fant now in Seattle following the Russell Wilson trade, the future is now for Albert O. He’s hauled in 44 receptions on 55 targets for 451 yards and three touchdowns in 18 of a possible 33 games (six starts) with the Broncos.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Okwuegbunam seems to be a lock to make the Broncos’ Week 1 roster. Ahead of the season, though, he’ll presumably battle this year’s third-round draft pick Greg Dulcich for the top TE slot. We’ll have more on Dulcich as this offseason roster series continues.
