The Denver Broncos haven’t made the playoffs since 2015, but they’re suddenly considered Super Bowl contenders — and they’re one of the hottest topics of the NFL offseason.
The arrival of quarterback Russell Wilson has driven the hype, understandably so. Wilson’s a franchise QB who’s reached two Super Bowls and has a Super Bowl win on his resume. Denver’s thrilled to have him.
“ he throws the ball, it’s beautiful,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said last week. “He’s what we call a natural thrower. The guy just can spin it …. He’s doing great, and we’re excited to see him just keep owning that system.”
Wilson’s also a bit of a hype man himself, similar to ex-Broncos pass rusher Von Miller. Wilson has a positive mindset and that’s apparent every time he speaks to the media. Wilson is the story in Denver right now, but he deflects praise to his teammates, hyping up his offensive (and defensive) peers.
“With the guys that we have, the weaponry that we have, the offensive line up front — those guys have been blocking their butts off,” Wilson said after the team’s first OTA practice on May 23. “It’s been a lot of fun and we have a really good system. We have some good stuff and some amazing stuff that we’re doing.
“Guys are getting open and they’re making plays. Guys were making plays all over today. Touchdown after touchdown and making plays and great catches. The defense was making good plays, too. It was such a competitive practice. It felt like a championship-type week in OTA1. That’s a good feeling.”
The first day of practice felt like a championship week? Yup, that’s the kind of hype we’d expect from a Von Miller presser. Wilson’s picked up the mantle now, and it’s not a bad thing. His positive mentality will be infectious and other players will buy in. The first step to success is believing it’s possible.
Fans will hope the hype off the field leads to on-field results this fall.
