Curtis Samuel was supposed to be the sidekick Washington coveted for No. 1 wide receiver Terry McLaurin when it signed him in free agency in March 2021.
Unfortunately for Washington and Samuel, things didn’t go as planned as a groin injury last offseason limited Samuel all season. He played in just five games, recording six receptions for 27 yards.
This offseason, Samuel said he was 100% healthy with no limitations. Thus far, he has participated fully in OTAs. But it’s understandable if Washington fans are a little skeptical.
One person who is not skeptical is offensive coordinator Scott Turner. Turner spent two seasons in Carolina as the quarterbacks coach and saw firsthand what Samuel could do for an offense. Turner and head coach Ron Rivera have remained confident that, once healthy, Samuel will be an impact player for the Commanders.
“Yeah. I mean, Curtis can play everywhere,” Turner said this week at OTAs.
“We did some of that last year in the limited time that he was on the field. I’m just happy for Curtis that he’s healthy. He’s back to his normal self, running around. Curtis is one of the smartest players I’ve been around. So he’s got no real limitations as far as the different things you can do with him. I know he’s excited to be out here, and I’m excited to see him out here.”
The Commanders took no chances this offseason. Adding another wide receiver was critical, and they did that with first-round pick Jahan Dotson. In addition to Dotson and Samuel, Washington will have No. 1 wide receiver Terry McLaurin back with second-year wideouts Dyami Brown and Dax Milne, and veteran Cam Sims.
If healthy, that’s an excellent group of wide receivers.
The Commanders envisioned Samuel playing multiple roles when they signed. Now that he’s healthy and free of limitations, the sky should be the limit for Samuel in Washington’s offense next season.
