Conference realignment changes confirmed for 2023

Conference realignment changes confirmed for 2023

While the Big Ten has no signs of making any conference realignment changes anytime soon, there will be a good amount of changes going down a year from now. As expected, the American Athletic Conference will officially be adding new members to its conference lineup in 2023.

The AAC will formally welcome Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA to the conference next summer (officially on July 1, 2023). All of these schools were previously confirmed to have accepted invitations to join the conference, but the timeline was officially moved up after it was confirmed the AAC’s departing members will be joining the Big 12 at the same time.

Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston will be leaving the AAC for the Big 12. The three AAC members will join the Big 12 with BYU next summer. Once it was worked out to allow those three schools move to the Big 12 next summer, it was a mere formality before it was confirmed the AAC’s new members would join the group from Conference USA.

Conference USA was already scheduled to add new members to its lineup in 2023. Conference USA will be adding Liberty, New Mexico State, and FCS programs Jacksonville State and Sam Houston State.

As for the Big 12, it is still unknown if Oklahoma and Texas will now be able to move to the SEC as early as 2023. It was previously announced the two Big 12 power programs would join the SEC in 2025, although it has been widely speculated that timeline would be accelerated. These changes could help move that process along a little faster.

As for the Big Ten, the biggest question remains what will happen with its championship game format and not on where the conference may now go for future expansion options.
