Ejiro Evero spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams as a safety and secondary coach and a passing game coordinator before becoming the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator this spring.
Evero had the perfect opportunity to learn the trade of elite coaching from the teaching of Rams head coach Sean McVay and former Rams defensive coordinator (and current Los Angeles Chargers head coach) Brandon Staley. Both coaches made what looked complicated simple on both sides of the ball.
But Broncos defensive players have alluded that the transition to Evero’s scheme has been easy. Reason being? Due to Evero being a part of former Broncos head coach Vic Fangio’s coaching tree. Mike Purcell spoke on his familiarity with the system due to playing under both coaches while with the San Francisco 49ers.
“I was with ‘E’ in San Francisco under Vic my first two years and then I had the benefit of being with him in L.A. after I was in San Francisco,” Purcell said on June 6. “It’s a very similar defense to me. A lot of the terminology and the way we play certain blocks, it’s very similar to me and it’s an easy transition. The terminology may be different, but there are a lot of similarities.”
Hopefully, this transition will show up tenfold on the field when the season starts this fall.
