Wentz was solid under pressure in 2021

Here we are, one month before training camp begins for all 32 NFL teams, and you’re apparently still not allowed to say nice things about new quarterback Carson Wentz.

In March, the Commanders acquired Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts, where he played for one season. Wentz’s numbers were solid, completing 62% of his passes for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

The Colts couldn’t wait to get rid of Wentz. Well, it wasn’t necessarily his ex-teammates or former coaches, but more of an owner-driven decision. Yet, everyone continues to criticize Wentz. His performance late in the season for Indianapolis was terrible, and many can’t get those performances out of their minds.

However, Pro Football Focus recently graded every starting quarterback from last season on the difference in their PFF grades from a clean pocket and pressured pocket. Wentz was among the best from a pressured pocket, with a PFF grade of 57.6. The only QBs with better grades than Wentz in that specific category were Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, Daniel Jones, Kyler Murray and Joe Burrow.

That’s not bad company.

Clean-pocket Passing Grade: 72.3 | Pressured-pocket Passing Grade: 57.6 | Difference: 14.7

Before he took over as the leading signal-caller for the Washington Commanders, Wentz completed 50.0% of his 162 pressured attempts for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns with the Colts. He averaged 6.2 yards per attempt and moved the sticks 47 times.

The problem with Wentz is his PFF grade from a clean pocket was 72.3. That tells the story of his inconsistent play at times. Wentz will have better weapons to throw to with the Commanders than he had the last couple of seasons with Philadelphia and Indianapolis. But, he must also make better decisions.

While Carson Wentz’s 2021 may not have been as good as his QB/INT ratio would indicate, he wasn’t nearly as bad as some will tell you.
