Brian Baldinger is one of the best NFL analysts in the media. The former NFL offensive lineman spent 12 seasons in the NFL, retiring after the 1993 season after two years with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Baldy’s Breakdowns” are some of the best Twitter content during the NFL season, as he breaks down the film of all 32 teams in preparation for the following week’s games.
While Baldinger is generally a positive person, or at least appears to be, one tweet from a user called “NFL Stats” seemed to draw the ire of the former NFL player recently.
The tweet in question praised current Washington quarterback Carson Wentz.
Fair enough.
Baldinger didn’t seem impressed, though.
When Baldinger took some criticism for his tweet, he didn’t back down.
Baldinger isn’t wrong. But do we dismiss a quarterback entirely because he hasn’t thrived in the playoffs? After all, Wentz has still only played in six NFL seasons. Baldinger was trying to make the point that Wentz’s teams have been to the playoffs three times in his six seasons. Yet, Wentz was limited to just nine total playoff snaps.
In 2017, Wentz looked like the NFL MVP before tearing his ACL in Week 14. In 2018, he was shut down after 11 games due to a back injury, and in 2019, Wentz departed an NFC Wild-Card game against the Seahawks after suffering a head injury.
There are plenty of reasons to criticize Wentz on the field. It appears some of his injuries are a result of bad luck. A torn ACL and a concussion can happen on any play. Yet, as Baldinger stated, he’s still only played nine playoff snaps.
Baldinger also isn’t wrong in pointing out that the original tweet that began this “discussion” was a meaningless stat. However, how is it if Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, or Russell Wilson did something similar, they’d be praised? Yet, Wentz is ridiculed. Again.
As we’ve stated throughout the offseason, it will be up to Wentz to change some of the narratives surrounding him this fall.
