The Washington Commanders made a significant investment in their future last week by signing wide receiver Terry McLaurin to a three-year contract extension.
As Washington entered the offseason, head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew told everyone that re-signing McLaurin was at the top of the team’s to-do list.
However, as other wide receivers around the NFL were getting paid, with multiple stars being traded to land their new deals, Washington fans became uneasy, wondering if the franchise could convince McLaurin to sign long-term.
While there were doubts, Rivera was adamant a deal would get done, and talks were not contentious, as some reports indicated. And only weeks later, McLaurin and the Commanders reached an agreement.
Now, we have the full details, courtesy of Over the Cap.
First, we look at the cap numbers for McLaurin over the next four seasons:
2022: $7.3 million
2023: $10.8 million
2024: $24.1 million
2025: $23.6 million
McLaurin’s contract also includes a voidable year in 2026, which is added for cap purposes.
Here are more details from McLaurin’s contact:
2022 cash payout: $29.5 million, which is 12% of Washington’s spending
2022 cash to cap ratio: 4.02
Total contract value: $68,199,882
AAV: $22.73 million per season
Fully guaranteed money: $34.6 million guaranteed at signing, $53.154 million in total guarantees
McLaurin’s compensation in both 2022 and 2023 is fully guaranteed
OTC ranks McLaurin’s contract as No. 7 among NFL wide receivers, which is an excellent deal for him. As other receivers agree to new contracts, the value will also look good for the Commanders.
Overall, this is a win for both sides.
