Robert Griffin III still wants to play quarterback in the NFL. In the meantime, Griffin’s promising media career took another big step forward Monday when it was revealed the former Washington quarterback would replace Randy Moss on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” in 2022.
Andrew Marchand of the New York Post first broke the news Monday morning. Griffin responded shortly after that, confirming Marchand’s report, and expressed gratitude to Moss and ESPN for the opportunity.
According to Marchand, Moss decided to leave his role voluntarily while negotiating a new contract with ESPN. He will remain on “Sunday NFL Countdown.”
Griffin last played in the NFL as a backup quarterback to Lamar Jackson for the Baltimore Ravens from 2018-20. The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Griffin was the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year in 2012, leading Washington to an NFC East title.
Unfortunately, his time in Washington ended after just four seasons. He spent the 2016 season with the Cleveland Browns and was out of football in 2017 before landing with the Ravens in 2018.
Griffin has been outspoken about wanting to play again, but being a backup quarterback may not be as enticing as his current media roles. In addition to his studio role, Griffin also called college games in 2021 and did an outstanding job.
It was a busy day for Griffin news Monday as the Washington Commanders added Griffin to the list of 15 candidates in contention for 10 to be added to the “90 Greatest” in franchise history.
