8 players there to start training camp

The 49ers will go into training camp with a handful of locks to make their 53-man roster. Alongside those locks are a number of players teetering on the edge between a roster spot and a release.

Training camp and preseason offer plenty of opportunities for the bubble to change. Our first installment of our look at the roster bubble features mostly notable offseason additions and familiar faces from last year’s club.

Let’s look at some of the key names that will begin training camp on the edge of a roster spot:

Dennard is a player who could quickly work his way off the bubble and comfortably into a roster spot. He’ll be in the mix at nickel corner, but the 49ers have a handful of young players and draftees who’ll also get a chance to shine at that spot. Hasty worked almost exclusively as the 49ers’ third-down back last year. He was fine in that role, but San Francisco has a crowded RB room and Hasty won’t just stroll into a roster spot. Hasty can play special teams, which helps, but he’ll need to show as a more effective RB to be one of the three or four that sticks around into the regular season.

RB Trey Sermon

To call Sermon’s rookie year disappointing would be an understatement. He was a healthy scratch in Week 1, then got injured on his first pro carry in Week 2. An injury on special teams coverage in Week 12 effectively ended his season. Sermon was a third-round pick in last year’s draft, so that’s helpful for him in his quest for a roster spot, but it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that he’s not locked into a job out of camp. He’ll have to put together a strong preseason to snag one.

Wilson is right there with Sermon and Hasty. He was effective last year when filling in for Elijah Mitchell, but with Mitchell…
