The Washington Commanders were in pads Tuesday for the first time in training camp. And when the pads come on, the physicality ramps up. As a result, more injuries happen.
Unfortunately for the Commanders, their first major injury of training camp occurred on Tuesday when rookie free-agent linebacker Drew White injured his leg in pass-protection drills after colliding with running back Antonio Gibson.
The injury didn’t look good at the time and that news was confirmed on Wednesday when head coach Ron Rivera confirmed that White suffered an ACL tear.
“Unfortunately it is an ACL tear,” Rivera said. “You could almost term it as a non-contact. He had his leg planted, he went to make a turn and pivot off of it and his cleats stayed in the ground, unfortunately. It’s very unfortunate. He’ll go through the process with the doctors and the team will take care of all of his medical needs. He’ll be on IR.”
White played five years at Notre Dame where he was a three-year starter and former team captain. He was one of three undrafted free-agent linebackers who were vying to make Washington’s roster.
With proven linebacker depth already an issue, it will be interesting to see if the Commanders pursue a veteran linebacker ahead of Week 1.
