College football has perhaps the most historic rivalries in North American sports. Some of these matchups have been played for more than a century, and every year, fans wait with bated breath for the next matchup.
The Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl is one of the most iconic settings in the sport. The great divide of Texas fans in burnt orange and Oklahoma fans in crimson is always a sight to behold.
So of course, this year’s rendition of the Red River Showdown is on 247Sports’ 25 most anticipated games of 2022 at No. 6.
While it does seem a little low, let’s see what Brad Crawford has to say.
As 247Sports colleague Will Backus notes, the Red River Showdown rarely disappoints. Texas only has two wins in this series over the past eight seasons, but seven games have come down to a single possession won just twice in the past eight years, all but one contest in that span came down to a single possession. If the Longhorns have a shot at snapping Oklahoma’s four-game win streak in the rivalry, that’ll come in 2022 with an electric, transfer portal-infused arsenal offensively. Heisman Trophy contender Bijan Robinson and top wideout Xavier Worthy have been around, but the arrival of Quinn Ewers, Isaiah Neyor and others adds to the intrigue for Texas on that side of the football. – Crawford, 247Sports
Sooners fans can blame the Longhorns’ lack of success in the past decade for this game not making the top five. There are a few games ahead of OU-Texas that both fanbases might disagree with.
Alabama-Texas ahead of OU-Texas is fine. Steve Sarkisian’s first matchup against Saban since leaving Tuscaloosa is a good story.
After the very public Jimbo Fisher-Nick Saban feud and last year’s matchup, Alabama-Texas A&M will be very fun to follow.
USC-Utah is where I draw the line. It has no business being ahead of OU-Texas. This has nothing to do with Lincoln Riley, it has to do with the status Red River is supposed to have in college…
