Back to pads and fans for Day 13 of New Orleans Saints training camp. This will serve as the team’s penultimate practice, with the opening preseason matchup against the Houston Texans just days away. Here are three players we’ll be watching today with a focus on those we look forward to seeing in game action on Saturday, Aug. 13:
1
WR Dai’Jean Dixon
In yesterday’s three players to watch, I highlighted wide receiver Kirk Merritt. Dixon, another hometown prospect as a graduate of Nicholls State, is another name to know ahead of this weekend’s game. He’s continuously found ways to steal attention throughout camp. Making big catches in 1-on-1s, showing off his deceptive speed and making good on his undeniable size, Dixon has made plays. In the past, we’ve seen receivers like Merritt and Dixon who have strong camps, but can’t put it together in the preseason. Both Louisiana products will look to change that narrative this season.
2
TE Lucas Krull
The undrafted free agent rookie is a part of a position group that felt wide open for a period of time before training camp began. Now, things look to be a little more solidified with standouts Adam Trautman, Taysom Hill and Juwan Johnson on the depth chart as well. Krull could go a long way for himself with a great performance this weekend. He should, regardless, make it past the first round of five roster cuts that must take place after the preseason opening weekend. Krull has been able to show flashes all throughout camp, putting that on display in full-speed game action will go a long way.
3
DE Scott Patchan
Patchan has made some nice plays throughout camp too. He’s proven to be a productive pass rusher and has been active in the run game. The Saints defensive end list is deep, featuring guys like Cameron Jordan, Marcus Davenport, Payton Turner and Carl Granderson. They have also added some more talent this offseason with athletic pass rusher T.J. Carter and former first-round selection Taco Charlton. The climb may be steep for Patchan, but if he can continue to show his value in both aspects of the game and special teams, he could set himself up for some consideration for the practice squad and some snaps via elevation.
