Kenny Dillingham details what separates a bad QB from a great one

Dan Lanning discusses QB competition after scrimmage

One of the major focuses for the Oregon Ducks this offseason and throughout fall camp has been the state of the quarterback position. With transfer Bo Nix coming from Auburn to compete with the likes of Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield, all eyes are on the QB room to figure out which player will be under center in Week 1 against the Georgia Bulldogs.

While we don’t have much indication as to which player leads that competition, the Ducks will go through their second scrimmage of the season on Saturday, giving all of the players a chance to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

On Friday afternoon during offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham’s media availability, I asked him what specifically he was looking for from the QB room in terms of improvement on Saturday. Here is what he had to say:

From an improvement standpoint: operating. When bad things happen, do we make a bad play horrible? I think that’s what separates great quarterbacks. It’s not necessarily the great plays that make SportsCenter, but do your bad plays make SportsCenter? When your bad plays don’t make SportsCenter, that’s when you’re a great quarterback.

That’s often been a problem for both Thompson and Nix in their careers. While Thompson hasn’t had many examples to show what he can do, the minimal playing time he has seen at times resulted in multiple mistakes that came from him trying to force the ball. The same can be said for Nix, who often ran into trouble when trying to do too much at Auburn, turning a broken play into a disaster.

Will Oregon’s QBs be able to right this wrong and improve on that going forward? We will find out on Saturday.
