Running back is certainly a position of diminishing returns in the NFL these days, and the devaluing of rushers has led to teams generally looking later and later in the draft to address it.
Not every mid-round running back pick works out, but Ty Davis-Price will hope to be one of the success stories. After leading LSU in rushing the last two seasons and eclipsing 1,000 yards in 2021 — largely thanks to a school-record 287 yards on the ground in the win over Florida — he was taken in the third round this spring by the San Francisco 49ers.
The ‘Niners are looking for running back depth. They return last year’s rookie phenom Elijah Mitchell, but they lost Raheem Mostert in free agency. Davis-Price saw quite a few opportunities in the preseason, taking 24 carries for 74 yards (3.1 average). He didn’t find the end zone, but he recorded five first-down carries with a long of 14 yards.
Davis-Price should see a good number of chances as a rookie. Here are the best pictures from his first taste of NFL action this preseason.
