Kirk Herbstreit is giving USC respect — is that a good thing?

ESPN doesn’t say why Kirk Herbstreit didn’t call USC spring game

Our friends at Fighting Irish Wire don’t have a very good football team right now, so when Notre Dame football isn’t snapping, crackling, and popping, what’s a guy to do? Focus on other national college football stories of interest.

An example: where Kirk Herbstreit is ranking the top teams in the nation, teams Notre Dame expects to battle with on an annual basis for College Football Playoff berths and elite status in the sport.

Irish Wire compiled Herbie’s top six after Week 3 of the college football season. Keep in mind that USC was No. 7 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, and that one week ago, the Trojans were No. 7 in the Associated Press Poll.

Herbie has USC in his top six.

“USC improved to 3-0 with a 45-17 victory over Fresno State on Saturday night,” Irish Wire wrote. “Granted it has been against Rice, a down Stanford program, and Fresno State, but the Trojans are yet to fail to put up 40 points in a contest this season.”

My thoughts on all this have been consistent: Beat Oregon State, and USC justifies all these lofty rankings. Beating the Beavers is such a huge goal for this team in 2022, because doing that sets up the Trojans for all the bigger goals they hope to reach. That’s the whole ballgame right now.

The rankings will take care of themselves. Beat OSU.
