THE GAME: The Washington football team (4-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) returns to the road for the second week in a row, traveling to play Arizona State (1-4, 0-2) Saturday afternoon in Tempe. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. PT/MT and the game will air on Pac-12 Network. UW will be looking to rebound from its first loss of the season last Friday night at UCLA, while ASU has lost four straight. Washington maintained a spot in this week’s polls despite the loss, ranking No. 21 in the new AP top 25 and No. 24 in the coaches’ poll.
QUICK HITTERS: Washington is No. 3 in the NCAA-FBS in passing offense, and is No. 7 in total offense … Husky quarterback Michael Penix, Jr. leads the nation in passing yards and passing yards per game, and is No. 5 in passing touchdowns … he is also No. 3 in total offense … Penix’s 16 touchdowns, through only five games, are just three shy of making the UW single-season top-10 list … Washington has scored on its first possession of both the first and second half in every game this season … no UW opponent this season has scored on its first drive of the game … Washington has punted in the first half just twice this year, and has punted just 10 times all season … UW has gone 3-and-out just four times in 55 offensive possessions this year … through five games, the Huskies have had five 100-yard receiving performances, from four different players: Rome Odunze (2), Giles Jackson, Jalen McMillan & Ja’Lynn Polk … only once before in UW history (2001) have four different UW players recorded a 100-yard receiving game over a three-game stretch, as those four did this year (games two through four) … six true freshmen have played for the UW this season: DL Jayvon Parker, CB Jayvion Green, PK Grady Gross, WR Denzel Boston, S Tristan Dunn & EDGE Lance Holtzclaw … the Husky roster includes 31 newcomers in 2022; here’s a breakdown: 20 freshmen, two junior college transfers, and nine four-year college transfers … of the 115 players on the roster, 55 are listed as freshmen (17) or redshirt freshmen (38), with an additional 28 sophomores … that means that 83 of 115 players (72 percent) have three or more years of remaining eligibility entering the 2022 season … UW has 12 players who are in their final year of eligibility in 2022.
