4 keys for Pittsburgh this week

4 keys for Pittsburgh this week

Typically when I write up something like this, I look at the keys to victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even last week against the Buffalo Bills we noted some things the Steelers needed to do in order to give themselves a fighting chance.

But this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with the litany of injuries the Steelers have, I’m not this is so much about keys to victory and more about keys to grow from and ways to play their best game regardless of the outcome.

No one is saying the Steelers gave up last week. But this team has had a wavering intensity all season long. This week we want to see the maximum effort in all three phases for all 60 minutes.

Last week the Steelers never even got close to Josh Allen and he threw for more than 400 yards and didn’t play the full game. Tom Brady could set his own records if the Steelers let him sit back like Allen did the week before. This also applies to unforced errors like penalties by the defense to keep Tampa on the field.

The best way to keep the Bucs from scoring is to possess the football. This shortens the game and keeps the defense on the sidelines. How do the Steelers do that? By running the football. Whether it is Najee Harris or Jaylen Warren, the plan has to be to feed these guys the football.

The Steelers can’t full on commit to blitzing Brady but defensive coordinator Teryl Austin better get creative and sort out a way to rush the passer. This will at least force Tampa to keep running the football.
