One key stat from Colorado’s first win

It wasn’t a pretty win, but it was a win, and that’s all that matters for the previously winless Colorado Buffaloes football team.

In Mike Sanford’s first game as interim head coach, the Buffs got the win over Cal in overtime, 20-13.

Through the first three quarters, Colorado had scored just three points and couldn’t get much going on offense. However, the fourth quarter was different, and a Montana Lemonious-Craig touchdown catch gave the Buffs the win in overtime.

But here’s the key stat for Colorado: 35.

Yes, 35. That is the number of rushing yards the Cal Bears had all game long in a stunning performance from the Colorado defense.

The Buffs had previously been gashed on the ground time and time again, but they were able to contain one of the best running backs in the Pac-12 in Jaydn Ott.

Ott finished with just 47 yards on 16 carries, and Cal quarterback Jake Plummer couldn’t get anything going on the ground, either.

For reference, this was only the second time all year long that Ott ran for fewer than 50 yards in a game, and it comes two weeks after he exploded for 274 rushing yards against Arizona.

The Mike Sanford-led Buffs played much better on both sides of the ball, and maybe this is a sign of things to come.
