Rutgers football is among the first programs to offer Charlie Hoitink.

Rutgers football is losing a big piece of their secondary with Monday’s announcement that Christian Izien is forgoing his final year of eligibility for the NFL draft.

A four-year contributor at Rutgers, Izien leaves the program following his best season in scarlet. He finished with 83 tackles, 1.5 sacks and five passes defended, all career-highs.

The Rutgers defensive back is instinctual, physical and committed. He is as good in pass coverage as he is in run defense. He is mobile as well as a solid tackler.

He measures in at 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds.

Izien posted about his decision to enter next spring’s NFL draft with a heartfelt message on social media. He credited former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash and current head coach Greg Schiano for his development:

Izien’s best game of his final season at Rutgers came in a loss to then No. 5 Michigan. He had nine tackles and a pass defended against a team that is likely headed to the College Football Playoff.

From Far Rockaway, N.Y., Izien finishes his Rutgers career with 292 career tackles and four interceptions.
