Five key stats from Rutgers football vs Maryland

Rutgers football had a rough one over the weekend, a 37-0 loss at Maryland putting a close to the season for the Scarlet Knights.

The game underscored that here are many holes head coach Greg Schiano still needs to fix on the offensive side, starting with the offensive coordinator. Nunzio Campanile took over the interim role when Sean Gleeson was fired halfway through the season. Will Schiano stick with Campanile for next season, or will he decide to go elsewhere? Campanile’s offense didn’t light up the scoreboard, making it a difficult decision for Schiano.

But, Campanile was also thrown into an impossible task, taking over a dismal offense midseason.

  • Rutgers had only seven total first downs on the day, lacking the ability to move the football on offense. The Scarlet Knights have a lot of fixing that needs to be done, starting with the offensive line. Rutgers needs to be able to run the football to take the pressure off of their young quarterback. With a total of 27 attempts, the Scarlet Knights only had 63 yards rushing, averaging 2.3 yards per carry.

  • It was an ugly performance in the passing game for the Scarlet Knights, getting just 72 passing yards in the game. Rutgers only averaged 3.3 yards per attempt. making it extremely difficult to move the football done the field. On the other hand, Maryland went 28-45 for a total of 379 yards.
