Vilay Nakkoun found a home with Rutgers football

Vilay Nakkoun Jr. played his high school football in Florida as a quarterback but where he ends up in the Rutgers offense, however, is anyone’s guess.

A member of the class of 2023, Nakkoun was a standout at Orlando Christian (Orlando, FL), where he guided the Warriors to an 11-2 record. He threw for 1,305 yards with 20 touchdowns and four interceptions, running for 344 yards and six interceptions as a senior. Strong numbers, to say the least.

Those numbers underscore a player who has the athleticism and versatility to make an impact on the Rutgers offense. He was recruited to be a wide receiver at Rutgers but his role in the offense is perhaps a bit undefined right now.

The three-star recruit was one of 19 high school players to make it official with Rutgers this week during the early signing period. He is one of six signees from Florida in this Rutgers recruiting class.

Nakkoun has the potential to be a playmaker in the Big Ten, although the draw to Rutgers was far more than making an impact on the field.

“Rutgers is more than just a team, it’s a family. The way they run things and the way they interact with each other and their hard work just fits me perfectly,” Nakkoun told Rutgers Wire this week.

“I feel like I have a lot of opportunities to do some good things here around great people.”

Nakkoun dove further into the culture that helped sway him to the Scarlet Knights.

“What made Rutgers perfect for me and the right fit was mostly the culture of the team. FTC, F.A.M.I.L.Y…Trust..CHOP,” Nakkoun said. “The way they run everything and what they are about fits me not only as a player but as a person.”

As for the all-important question about his fit on the field, that remains to be seen.

In high school as a quarterback, Nakkoun was a dynamic player whether passing or running in the open field. For a Rutgers football program that is without an offensive coordinator right now, it is simply enough to add a versatile and explosive…
