Hawkeyes join Big Ten history books for one odd reason

They say it is good to be remembered for years to come, right? Well, some of the time that can be true. And in some ways, this plunge, or rather trip, into the history books is a bit of both. The Iowa Hawkeyes did get to eight wins, which is a feat they have done eight of the last 10 years with 2020 being one of those misses due to the COVID-19 shortened season when they still finished 6-2.

This time, Iowa finds themselves joining the likes of Big Ten teams that are 50-60 years in the past. The Hawkeyes find themselves as one of just five Big Ten teams since World War II to get to eight wins all while averaging under 18 points per game.

Yes, you read that right. The other teams are all from the 1960s. The closest year this occurred 1967, was 55 years ago. The Iowa Hawkeyes have taken football back 55 years and still found a way to win eight games.

This place in history is kudos to what was an incredible defense from the Hawkeyes. While Iowa averaged 18 points per game or less, their defense allowed only 13.3 points per game.

As they say, it doesn’t matter how you win as long as you find a way to win. Iowa was the epitome of that this season. So, while Iowa may have actually set football back 60 years, their defense and special teams still found a way to get wins.
