Transfer portal rule changes limit number of entries without penalty

The transfer portal and the NIL. To Joe Football Fan, especially a particular type of Joe Football Fan, these two things were going to signal the death knell of college football.

Well, to a certain extent, the NCAA agreed. At least as far as the former went as the governing body changed the rules for transfer portal usage earlier in the week. The new wrinkle will affect players who enter the portal a second time.

Any undergraduate player – graduate students are not subject to the rule change – who transfers for a second-or-further time has to meet certain guidelines in order to not sit out a year between transfers. Specifically, a player can’t leave a school for a second time (or further) because of a lack of fit, culture or playing time.

The NCAA is allowing for extenuating circumstances like injury and others, but the biggest fan complaint had been about players abandoning ship because of playing time.

The players can still exit once for any reason they choose. But starting with the second transfer, an NCAA approved reason must be given in order to avoid missing the next season.

Maybe next they can do something similar for coaches, eh?
