Will linemen flip play-to-play under Bobby Petrino?

There is plenty to discuss revolving around Jimbo Fisher’s decision to hire Bobby Petrino to serve as his offensive coordinator. That conversation has taken place, and will continue to. But  atleast from the outside, it appears that Bobby Petrino’s tenure is off to a very productive start, with positive recruiting momentum building, and not a murmur of problems.

So for now, we’ll allow the focus to shift to the football side of things, and begin to ask some questions about what Petrino’s offense might look like with the Aggies.

In that vein, an interesting nugget, that has so far been unmentioned.

Will the offensive linemen flip sides play to play?

Why would that be a question that needs to be asked? Well, in the past, as illustrated in this image from his 2006 Louisville playbook, Petrino employed a “weakside” and a “strongside” of his offensive line, rather than left and right.

Could this be an idea that Petrino left in the past?

Well, in 2018, his last year at Louisville, Petrino coached Mekhi Becton, a massive tackle, who wound up being a 1st round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. But in 2018, Becton played 414 snaps at left tackle, and 349 at right tackle.

So this will definitely be something to watch as spring football approaches.
