Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Wins 2022 NFL MVP Award

Patrick Mahomes has won the 2022 NFL MVP after a dominant season where he threw more than 5,000 yards and 41 passing touchdowns.

The honour is Mahomes’ second MVP gong, having won the crown in 2018. It also comes days out from Mahomes leading the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVI.

The Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s showpiece event in at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Mahomes has been a huge part of the Chiefs’ 2022 season success, throwing 5,250 yards for 41 touchdowns with a 67.1 per cent completion rate and a 77.5 total QBR, along with four rushing touchdowns.

The Chiefs QB overcame an ankle issue to guide his side past the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 a fortnight ago.

Mahomes won the award ahead of Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen, earning 48 of 50 first-place votes.

“He’s always playing a step ahead,” Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce told reporters earlier on Thursday. “He’s always playing chess out there in terms of he’s got three or four moves already in his pocket depending on what the defense does. I love playing with him.

“He’s nonstop, always trying to find ways to make himself better. You saw that more so this year than in any other year we’ve played knowing that the pieces were a little different in terms of the weapons he has.

“The scrutiny, everybody was kind of looking to see how he was going to take his game to the next level and sure enough, I’m pretty sure he’ll win MVP.”

Mahomes was MVP in 2018, while he was a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP in 2019. He also set an NFL record in 2022 of 5,614 total yards in a season.
