DURHAM – Duke was back in action Friday as its spring football practice schedule officially kicked off with a two-hour session at the Brooks Practice Facility.

The Blue Devils worked out in helmets for the first day and focused on special teams and positional drills. At the conclusion of practice, Duke head coach Mike Elko, offensive lineman Jacob Monk and defensive tackle Ja’Mion Franklin spoke with the media for the first time this spring.

“It’s always great to get back out there,” Elko said. “When you come out for spring practice there is just so much excitement. Excitement to get ready for next year to start the process of building this team and building the characteristics that this team needs to go out and be successful. I thought we had great energy today. We had a really good off-season. Kids are excited about where this program is going and the direction we’re heading. Now everything is about elevation. Taking last year and building off of it as we go into spring ball. I’m excited to get going.”

Monk added that the team is ready for a second season under Elko’s leadership.

“We’re comfortable. We’re comfortable in the system that we’ve had in place for a year now but also we’re just still hungry. You would think after a year like we had people would ease up but we’re working as hard as ever and we’re just ready to keep going.”

Duke will return to the practice field for their second spring workout…
