EAST LANSING, Mich. – On a beautiful spring afternoon with abundant sunshine and temperatures in the low-80s, the Michigan State football team wrapped up spring practice by hosting the “Spartan Football Kickoff” on Saturday in Spartan Stadium. It marked the 15th and final practice of the spring.
The event began with nine periods of drills and individual position work, and concluded with six periods of live scrimmage situations.
“This is a team that we look at our roster, as a staff, and we feel like every guy on our roster is bought into what we are doing,” said fourth-year MSU head coach Mel Tucker. “That is a really good thing. The guys understand what we are looking for – we are looking for a relentless mindset on and off the field in everything that we do and then we want toughness, discipline and selfless guys. Our players have bought into that and because of that we have had a really productive spring.”
Michigan State is scheduled to open the season at home on Sept. 2 vs. Central Michigan.
“Our culture continues to be cemented, the new guys, whether they are high school guys or transfers, understand what the expectations are and standards,” said Tucker. “That is important, and we are going to add some players in June and we are looking forward to using those guys to help build our team to be stronger and more competitive. It has just been a very productive spring. I think every position has had really good competition and guys have gotten better. We added some new coaches and they have done a really good job. This is a very strong staff, lots of experience and really good teachers, and I feel like our team has really bought in and we are in a really good place going into the summer.”

On quarterback competition…
We will continue the competition throughout the summer and fall camp. This was a practice format and so you see guys getting work with different groups, get a lot of reps and then we grade everything by the way they are competing. It’s a very healthy competition, competition makes us all better and so we have a really good competition at every position. I thought we had good work today, so today was very indicative of what we’ve seen out of those guys throughout the spring.
