Eleven VFLs are members of wild card teams playing this weekend, including six who are on active rosters.
Derek Barnett’s Houston Texans take on Cedric Tillman’s Cleveland Browns to kick things off at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday on NBC. The Texans claimed Barnett off waivers last month. Tillman was ruled out on Thursday with an injury. Running back John Kelly Jr. is a member of the Browns’ practice squad.
In Saturday’s nightcap starting guard Trey Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Miami Dolphins at home at 8 p.m. on Peacock. Smith is vying for his second straight Super Bowl ring and his second in his first three seasons in the league. Linebacker Alexander Johnson serves on the Dolphins’ practice squad.
Five VFLs will be on the field when the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions square off at 8 p.m. Sunday on NBC. The Lions feature All-Pro linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, cornerbacks Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley and rookie quarterback Hendon Hooker. Reeves-Maybin was selected to his first career Pro Bowl and was named to the NFLPA’s All-Pro Team on Wednesday. He was tied for first in the NFL with 13 special teams tackles. Moseley has been on injured reserve since October.
On the other side of the field will be edge rusher Byron Young, who had a dominant rookie regular season with the Rams. Young, who played two seasons under the tutelage of UT coach Rodney Garner, has tallied 50 total tackles and eight sacks in his first season.
Rookie tight end Princeton Fant is a member of the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad. The Cowboys host the Green Bay Packers at 4:30 p.m. Sunday on FOX.
Meanwhile, wide receiver Jauan Jennings and the San Francisco 49ers secured the top seed in the NFC and await a wild card winner next weekend. The Baltimore Ravens earned the top seed in the AFC, and they feature VFL Tee Martin, who serves as the organization’s quarterbacks coach.
