Get to know Shane Waldron

The Bears are looking for an offensive coordinator who is able to design an offense around players rather than force a system on them, which was the problem with Getsy (and Matt Nagy before him). Waldron is not only an experienced playcaller, but he’s proven he can design an offense around multiple quarterbacks. Waldron has worked with several high-level quarterbacks during his time with the Rams and Seahawks, all with different skillsets. Whether it was traditional pocket passers like Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford or mobile quarterbacks like Russell Wilson and Geno Smith, Waldron understood how to build an offense around the specific quarterback in place.

Waldron has worked with some of the best in Bill Belichick in New England (2002-04), Sean McVay in Los Angeles (2017-20) and Pete Carroll in Seattle (2021-23). While Waldron has been a head coach candidate for several years, he’s been passed over by those in the NFL. Still, he’s one of the better, experienced offensive playcallers available.

While Seattle has ranked 16th, 10th, and 17th in scoring offense and 24th, 12th, and 14th in passing yards per game under Waldron, his work with Geno Smith (who won Comeback Player of the Year in 2022) has been nothing short of impressive. Whoever winds up being the Bears’ quarterback in 2024 — Justin Fields, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or someone else — Waldron has shown he has the adaptability Chicago is desperately seeking to build around that player.
