Michigan held a commitment from top-100 cornerback Chris Ewald but lost his pledge in the days following the national title victory… which is a crazy sentence to type.
The Wolverines aren’t entirely out of his recruitment, but Ewald is getting hefty NIL offers from all of the Florida schools and a couple of others nationally. Michigan’s best option outside of Ewald is Ohio Native Trey McNutt. McNutt is the 36th player nationally and would likely stay in-state, but the Buckeyes already hold commitments from the first, second, and tenth highest-rated cornerbacks in the country. It’s tough to sell that many cornerbacks the year after landing two more top-ten-ranked cornerbacks.
Michigan has four cornerbacks from the 2023 and 2024 cycles on the roster and just two of them are mid-four-stars. Landing a true stud cornerback is of the utmost importance if Michigan wants to compete with the vaunted passing attacks of Ohio State, USC, Oregon, and whatever the playoff committee has in store. Will Johnson set the blueprint, the Wolverines must capitalize.
