Brian Hoyer, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback, responded to the criticisms levied at him by Johnny Manziel in a recent interview with Shannon Sharpe. The quarterback responded on Good Morning Football. Manziel alleged Hoyer made him feel unwelcomed in the Browns locker room.
Hoyer apologized if he made Manziel feel alienated during his season with the Browns. Hoyer admitted he was apathetic toward Manziel and how he could’ve offered him more as a mentor. Hoyer stated any ill will he harbored was for Jimmy Haslam and former general manager Ray Farmer for trying to rush Hoyer out of his hometown team.
Hoyer stated that the story of him telling Manziel to shut up in a meeting room was a lie. Hoyer took Manziel’s silence as being studious rather than dejected. Hoyer learned from Tom Brady for most of his career and exclaimed he never asked questions during his rookie season.
Hoyer offered a funny anecdote about Brady shooting down questions during their time in New England. Brady set a daily limit on the questions of an inquisitive young quarterback three questions per day. The next day, when the young quarterback asked Brady how his morning was going, Brady replied, “Good. You have two more questions.”
The comical story sheds light on how valuable meeting time is in the NFL. Coaches and players have a limited amount of time to review the minute details of a game plan.
Unfortunately, there’s not enough time to tutor a young quarterback. Studying will always be a lonely endeavor.
