5 running backs New York Giants could sign to replace Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants chose not to use the franchise tag on star running back Saquon Barkley, setting him up for his first foray into NFL free agency next week.

That leaves the Giants in need of running back help as their 2024 depth chart suddenly looks shaky: Eric Gray, Gary Brightwell, Jashaun Corbin, and Deon Jackson.

It appears the Giants are not willing to pay one running back a considerable amount to carry the load for them going forward. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are firm believers in the running back-by-committee approach as is offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

There are plenty of running backs headed for the free agent market next week and several of them will command over $10 million per season, Barkley among them. The Giants likely won’t allocate anywhere near that for any of these backs. If that were the case, they would have kept Barkley.

D’Onta Foreman is a solid scrimmage runner with some versatility that fantasy players know very well. He can come in and simply take over games. He is inconsistent and has bounced all over the league as a result. The Giants can likely get him on a one-year deal for fairly cheap. Foreman is the consummate backup/committee back Daboll could make use of.

Another player fantasy owners know very well. Gus Edwards comes from Baltimore, where he is a perfect complement to Lamar Jackson and the other fleeter backs. He is a power runner who scored 13 touchdowns last season and would be the banger/pile pusher the Giants have not had in recent years.

Everyone knows A.J. Dillion as the Green Bay Packers have had a lot of national exposure over the past few years. He is a versatile back who is still just 25 and could be a fit in the Giants’ backfield at a very reasonable price. Like the others, he’s no Barkley but combined with Gray and perhaps a rookie, he can help keep the Giants’ rushing attack steady…
