ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It’s a different deal for new Michigan football defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan.
After leaving his alma mater, Louisiana, where he was the defensive coordinator, which he joined after a short stint coaching at Vanderbilt under former Michigan DC Jesse Minter, he’s inheriting a new level of talent.
The Wolverines have players that are on another level, especially in the secondary. Will Johnson is a potential first-round pick next year, and though he’s injured, Rod Moore is a surefire NFL draft pick when he chooses to leave.
Still, despite having higher-end talent than he’s coached in the past, Morgan is keen on development, and that includes a player like a former five-star in Will Johnson. And the good news is Johnson doesn’t behave like a star player who may be the best defensive back in the country.
“If you’re at practice, Will Johnson is like a freshman that just got here, early enrollee trying to earn his respect from his teammates,” Morgan said. “Every time somebody makes a big play and if Will is not on the field, he’s running into the endzone with everybody. The dude cares about his teammates. He’s the ultimate teammate that I have ever been around. Really, that’s his parents. His parents do a great job, his sister that works with us now, they’re just first-class people.
“The dude just cares about his teammates. He’s very genuine, he always wants to learn, he always wants to coach each other. I learn a lot from him. You’ve got a new coach coming here and asking you to change some techniques, he’s open. He’s just a very unique player, man. That’s what I think people don’t realize, the dude truly, truly cares about his teammates and he works like he’s just trying to earn a spot on the bus every single day.
Johnson is an obvious talent, but the big question is who will replace Josh Wallace on the other side of him.
