There’s not a glaring need at cornerback. The emergence of Daron Bland as an All-Pro on the outside, filling in for All-Pro Trevon Diggs, leads many to think the Cowboys won’t look to a corner. But it shouldn’t be ruled out. Here, the draft fell that McKinstry was a top talent available at No. 24 and Dallas jumps on the chance to corner the market.
Bland can shift back inside to slot corner, if Diggs comes out the gate healthy. There’s now actual depth to guard against injury and a future three-headed monster at the position awaits.
Mike Zimmer’s secondary plan resembles what is run by Nick Saban at Alabama, so the learning curve isn’t steep and if Zimmer lasts more than one season that will be truly helpful. McKinstry’s length and smoothness pair well with his high football IQ and he’ll be helpful immediately.
