Mertz Named to Maxwell Award Watch List

The senior quarterback looks to improve on a 2023 campaign in which he became one of the most efficient passers in the country.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida quarterback Graham Mertz has been named to the 2024 Maxwell Award preseason watch list, the award handed to the most outstanding player in college football each season. The recognition comes following a season which saw Mertz become one of the most efficient passers in the country, finishing third in the nation in completion percentage (min. 250 completions).

A transfer from Wisconsin, Mertz became a team leader and one of UF’s top players in 2023, throwing for a career-high 2,903 yards. Mertz led the Southeastern Conference by completing 72.9 percent of his passes (261 of 358) with a career-high 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.

The full list consists of 80 players, with the SEC seeing 15 of it’s players named to the list of candidates.
